Welcome to the UK Pinball Tournaments 2020

BREAKING NEWS: THE UK PINBALL OPEN & CLASSIC HAVE BEEN POSTPONED - SEE BELOW

Due to the Coronavirus, the UK Government's advice not to hold gatherings and the current closure of our venue, Flip Out London, we have sadly decided to postpone the four days of tournaments originally due to run from Thursday 23rd April to Sunday 26th April, 2020.

Although players were keen for the tournaments to go ahead as originally planned, with the situation developing almost daily we feel it is the safest and most socially-responsible thing to do.

We do plan to hold the four days of tournaments once it is safe to do so, but can't currently commit to any specific dates. So, we will shortly start refunding all registration fees through Paypal back to the original payment method.

Thanks you for supporting UK Pinball Tournaments. We're sorry we couldn't hold our event as planned, but we look forward to announcing the new dates as soon as we can.

(Incidentally, anyone who booked accommodation at the Premier Inn we suggested below can now cancel that booking for free, even if it was non-cancellable when you booked.)

There are around fifty pinballs at Flip Out London

We are pleased to announce that the UK Pinball Open and UK Pinball Classic will return in 2020, back in the nation's capital - London.

We have consulted with the UK's pinball community regarding the Coronavirus issues and they were strongly supportive of our plans and wanted everything to go ahead.

So, the UK's two premier tournaments will be held on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April, 2020 at the country's largest pinball club, Flip Out London in Croydon. Not only that, we are adding a second classics tournament and expanding our regular Thursday night league on 23rd April to produce a full four days of competitive pinball in the UK's capital.

The fun at Flip Out London starts on Thursday 23rd April

Registration for the maximum of 80 places is now open and you can register through this website below.

All the tournaments will be held at Flip Out London. Here's a schedule of events over the four days:

THURSDAY 23RD APRIL

- The first tournament will be held at 7pm on Thursday 23rd April when Flip Out London will host a Super League tournament run by London Pinball.

Matt Vince is your Tournament Director for the event which will feature ten machines with everyone playing a single game on each which will be ranked against all the other scores on that game. When everyone has played all their games or the end of qualifying has been reached, the top-ranked players will play in head-to-head knock-out rounds to decide the winner. The exact number of qualifiers for the knock-out rounds will depend on the number of competitors taking part. The top players will all receive trophies.

Entry to Flip Out London costs £10 for non-members (free entry to members). Trophies will be awarded for the top four players in the Thursday Tournament.

FRIDAY 24TH APRIL

The first of two classics tournaments takes place on Friday 24th April with the all-new Pinball News Classic.

Neil McRae is your Tournament Director for this as well as all the other tournaments on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Competitors will be given twelve attempts to play the ten classic machines - one game on each plus two re-tries of their choice. Scores on each machine will be ranked, with the top twelve players proceeding to the playoffs. Qualifying begins at 10am, with the play-offs starting at 5pm. To keep things fair for everyone, it's one entry (twelve games) per player with no re-buys.

- Friday 24th April is also the start of qualifying for the UK Pinball Open - the UK's IFPA European Championship Series qualifying tournament.

The UK Pinball Open will divide players into groups of 10 for qualifying, with two groups playing at the same time. The first two groups will play on Friday evening at 6pm, after the Pinball News Classic has concluded.

Each player will play a single three-ball game against each of the other 9 players in their group. The order of opponents and machines to play will be pre-selected and shown on everyone's player card.

When all the games have been played the players in each group will be ranked. Everyone will qualify for Sunday's play-offs but those with the most wins will earn several byes through the play-offs on Sunday 26th April.

Last year's UK Pinball Open

There are four UK Pinball Open qualifying sessions, each lasting 3.5 hours with up to 20 players (in 2 groups of 10) competing. The first qualifying session is on Friday evening at 6pm, lasting until 21:30. The second round of qualifying begins on Saturday morning at 10:00 until 13:30. The third runs from 14:00 to 17:30, while the last session begins at 18:00 until 21:30. The results from each session will be announced as soon as the round is over, unless any play-offs are needed to decide who qualifies.

In the UK Pinball Classic the qualifying will follow the same format as the Pinball News Classic on Friday, with ten machines available and each player allowed twelve games on any of them to get their best scores. Each player's best scores on each machine will be ranked (lower scores discarded) and when qualifying ends the 12 top-ranked players will play in Sunday's play-offs with the top four getting a bye through the first round. As with the Pinball News Classic, it's one entry (twelve games) per player with no re-buys.

SUNDAY 26th APRIL

- The play-offs for the UK Pinball Open and UK Pinball Classic will begin at 10am on Sunday 26th April.

In the UK Pinball Open, the players will play standard head-to-head, best-of-three, double-elimination rounds until we have a winner. The higher a player qualified in Friday and Saturday's rounds, the more byes they will have and the further into the play-offs they will join.

Last year's UK Pinball Open winner, Roberto Pedroni

The play-offs for the Classic will be a simpler affair, with the 12 qualifiers playing single-game head-to-head single-elimination matches to produce the final two who will play a best-of-three final.

Last year's UK Pinball Open winner, Craig Pullen

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top players in both tournaments.

There will be trophies for all tournaments, with cash prizes for the top players in the UK Pinball Open and Classic. Useful information:

By holding the UK's biggest tournaments in London, we can ensure great transport links and an unrivalled variety of attractions for players and their families. Plus, by being located a short way outside the centre, the hotels are much more affordable while it's only a few minutes by car, train, taxi or bus to get to the huge range of cultural, historic, commercial and other landmark destinations in the heart of London.

Flip Out London's home is just south of central Croydon which is itself south of the centre of London. Central Croydon has numerous eateries, bars, major shops, malls, and much more. Trains to East Croydon run frequently from Victoria and London Bridge stations in central London, and take around 15 minutes. From East Croydon you can either get the tram to Wandle Park or walk to Flip Out London in around 15 minutes.

There are plenty of hotels in and around Croydon. Prices fluctuate, but we have seen good deals at the Premier Inn, Croydon with nightly rates for Thursday and Friday as low as £30. For good value hotels either in walking distance or a short drive from Flip Out London, look around the Croydon Airport area.

Wherever you choose to stay and travel, with the Coronavirus situation developing and official advice changing, we would strongly advise you to ensure you make refundable arrangements wherever possible. While we are committed to hosting all our planned events, if we are officially advised or instructed not to proceed, for the sake of all competitiors we will have to comply. If that happens we will, of course notify all registered competitors and issue a full refund.

For transport information, check the website for Flip Out London.

Excited and ready to register?  Great. You can sign up for all the tournaments here.

There is a maximum of 20 players in each of the four UK Pinball Open sessions and a maximum of 80 players in each of the two Classic tournaments. Pre-registration is required. There will be no on-the-day registrations. Registration here will run until either all the places are sold or Thursday 16th April - one week before the first of our four tournament.

Note that payments are non-transferable and non-refundable except if a tournament is cancelled or if it is sold out and we are able to resell the registration to someone on our wait list.

REGISTRATION:

For the UK Pinball Open, choose one of the available time slots and add that to your cart. You can also tell us if you are happy to play in an alternative time slot in case another player can only make a sold out slot. We will then try to juggle players around to make everyone happy.

For the Pinball News Classic on Friday and UK Pinball Classic on Saturday there are no specific time slots - just add those to your cart to register as qualifying runs all day.
